Blue on blue: Helen Thomas hammers Gibbs on Obama’s phony town hall

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Blue on blue: Helen Thomas hammers Gibbs on Obama’s phony town hall.

“What the hell do they think we are, puppets?”

“Nixon didn’t try to do that,” Thomas said. “They couldn’t control (the media). They didn’t try.

“What the hell do they think we are, puppets?” Thomas said. “They’re supposed to stay out of our business. They are our public servants. We pay them.”

Thomas said she was especially concerned about the arrangement between the Obama Administration and a writer from the liberal Huffington Post Web site. The writer was invited by the White House to President Obama’s press conference last week on the understanding that he would ask Obama a question about Iran from among questions that had been sent to him by people in Iran.

“Nobody wants to keep them here,” he said. “They will be released as soon as they are checked.”

Why was Obama so wrongly optimistic on the economy? | Blogs |

My spin:  It’s not so much that a more negative forecast would have prevented Obama from spending large amounts of money, it’s that he would have been forced to tilt the stimulus more in favor of tax cuts which work a lot of faster  than government spending (though both are pretty inefficient as “stimulus”).

Major Military Operation Under Way In Afghanistan

By: Pam On: Jul/1/09 - 1 Comment

God Speed:

Dubbed Operation Khanjar, or “Strike of the Sword,” the military push was described by officials as the largest and fastest-moving of the war’s new phase. British forces last week led similar missions to fight and clear out insurgents in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar provinces.

“Where we go we will stay, and where we stay, we will hold, build and work toward transition of all security responsibilities to Afghan forces,” Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson said in a statement.

Southern Afghanistan is a Taliban stronghold but also a region where Afghan President Hamid Karzai is seeking votes from fellow Pashtun tribesmen.

Allahpundit:

It’s a laugh riot, isn’t it? Actually, they might be laughing more at Gibbs’s feeble way of ducking the question than The One’s looming broken promise, but in Gibbs’s defense, what’s he supposed to say? Obama pounded McCain for wanting to pay for health care by taxing benefits, rode into D.C. promising Change, and now he’s going to eat a crap sandwich by reversing himself because it turns out personal charisma doesn’t work on hard economic numbers. So Axelrod and company have to go out and face the firing squad and “explain” via stuttering half-answers why Barry O lied about this last year. It’s a political microcosm of Obama’s economic M.O.: They borrowed political capital by pledging “no new taxes” to win the election and now down the road the bill’s finally come due.

Here we go again! Barney Frank asks FANNIE and FREDDIE to relax Mortgage lending rules…

Fannie, Freddie asked to relax condo loan rules: report | Reuters.

Two U.S. Democratic lawmakers want Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to relax recently tightened standards for mortgages on new condominiums, saying they could threaten the viability of some developments and slow the housing-market recovery, the Wall Street Journal said.

In March, Fannie Mae (FNM.N)(FNM.P) said it would no longer guarantee mortgages on condos in buildings where fewer than 70 percent of the units have been sold, up from 51 percent, the paper said. Freddie Mac (FRE.P)(FRE.N) is due to implement similar policies next month, the paper said.

Administration overture to Khamenei ridiculed in sermon

Prior to this month’s disputed presidential election in Iran, the Obama administration sent a letter to the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for an improvement in relations, according to interviews and the leader himself.Ayatollah Khamenei confirmed the letter toward the end of a lengthy sermon last week, in which he accused the United States of fomenting protests in his country in the aftermath of the disputed June 12 presidential election.

U.S. officials declined to discuss the letter on Tuesday, a day in which President Obama gave his strongest condemnation yet of the Iranian crackdown against protesters.

IN 55 MINUTES, OBAMA DIDN’T MENTION IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, TROOPS, SOLDIERS — OR WAR!

By: Pam On: Jun/23/09 - 1 Comment

What Obama didn’t mention

A couple of surprising words were missing from President Barack Obama’s 55-minute news conference on Wednesday: “Iraq” — and “Afghanistan.”

Also MIA: “Korea,” “Pakistan,” “soldiers,” “surge” and “war” — as well as the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

The omissions were partly a result of the short attention span of the press, which did not ask about those topics after the president did not mention them in his opening statement.

But the silence on those subjects also provides a striking illustration of one of the singular differences between Obama and his predecessor.

Hannity Again Discusses California’s Congress-created Dust Bowl

Hannity Again Discusses California’s Congress-created Dust Bowl | NewsBusters.org.

On Friday, as I drove back from my southern California office north on I-5, I witnessed it firsthand seeing for myself what many are now calling the Congress-created Dust Bowl.

Of course, global warming obsessed media, when they bother to report this dire situation, typically blame the problem on California’s drought.

Fortunately, Fox News viewers know the truth, as on Friday, for the second time in two months (see Brad Wilmouth’s “FNC: Drought-Stricken Farmers Lose Fight for Water to Endangered Fish“), Sean Hannity informed the nation what the real cause is — the Endangered Species Act and a federal judge’s decision in August 2007 to save a little-known fish called the Delta smelt

FATTIES BAD NEWS AT NBC

FATTIES BAD NEWS AT NBC- New York Post.

HE staff at NBC News isn’t younger and hotter than the staffs at other network news operations — it just seems that way. Sources say that when Brian Williams left his desk to deliver Wednesday’s nightly broadcast from the middle of the newsroom, producers brought in some ringers. “NBC newsroom staffers don’t look like Vogue staffers,” said one source. “So they asked less attractive, heavier staffers to move seats and allow younger, thinner members of the staff to act as extras.” The “extras,” including two interns who normally run errands, were told to sit up straight, look busy and keep their computers on the MSNBC Web site. “No porn behind Brian,” our source laughed. An NBC rep denied any reality-altering: “The majority of the people seen on the newscast are the same people who are there every night.” As for the interns? “They were serving a purpose. They were helping out with the broadcast.”

IGNORANCE: Hillary demands settlement closure in Israel, but not freedom in Iran

By: Pam On: Jun/18/09 - Leave Your Comment

The Financial Times called it “one of the most tense encounters” of the last several years between Israel and the US, and for good reason:

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, clashed face to face with her Israeli counterpart on Wednesday as the two countries remained at loggerheads over the expansion of settlements in occupied territory.

In what appeared one of the most tense encounters between the sides for several years, Mrs Clinton and Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s foreign minister, disagreed on both the US call for a complete freeze on settlement growth and Israel’s contention that the administration of George W. Bush, the former president, had signalled that some expansion was permissible.

He Who Will Not Be Questioned: Obama has fired 2 IGs in 2 weeks, leashed another

By: Pam On: Jun/18/09 - 14 Comments

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Obama has fired 2 IGs in 2 weeks, leashed another.

The firing of Gerald Walpin as Inspector General was not an isolated incident, as the Chicago Tribune reports today.  Two more IGs have been dismissed in the past two weeks, and Senator Charles Grassley has started demanding answers.  The sudden push to rid the government of independent watchdogs appears to coincide with Barack Obama’s plans to use government spending to get control over more aspects of American life, such as with stimulus spending, the financial sector, and volunteer organizations
